Olimpic Games
you iniziano Oggi Olympics in China with the usual opening ceremony that will be all pomp and eloquence, in celebration of a nation where human rights are systematically ignored. Not to mention the repression in Tibet. I sincerely piacerebb and that the Olympics are not just about sport and excitement of a State would find it fair that the athletes are confronted with no flags and no behind nations, ready to climb on the bandwagon to enhance a sense of racial anachronistic. However, this blog will refrain from commenting on the Olympics, a kind of grace, making his line Amnesty International: " the Olympics, we present the Chinese government to four basic demands: to take measures to reduce significantly the application of the death penalty as a first step towards its complete abolition, apply all forms of detention in accordance with standards and international human rights standards human and introduce measures to protect the right to a fair trial and prevent torture and ensure full freedom of action to human rights defenders, putting an end to threats, intimidation, arrests and convictions against them; to end the censorship , especially with regard to Internet users. Cividale del Friuli
Paesone in provincia di Udine, Cividale del Friuli vanta origini molto remote, for it is the presence of Palaeolithic and Neolithic populations then Celtic. In the middle of the first century BC Julius Caesar founded a town hall with the name of Iulii Forum (the Forum of Julius ") which later became known throughout the region: Friuli. Some sections of Roman walls are visible under the later-era Venice. The town grew in importance in the Middle Ages and became a bishopric of the main region, due to destruction of Aquileia and then abandoned by the Hun. It was then an important city and capital of its Lombard Duchy of Friuli. Even under the Franks did not fail to fame in the 850 and was the birthplace of Berengar I, first king of Italy and then Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. In the ninth century was called Civitas Austriae , hence the current name. From the twelfth century was a free commune and then by the fifteenth century came under the dominion of Venice. Among his examples are interesting monuments: The underground Celtic series of artificial caves probably used for worship by the Celts and then by the Romans as prisons, the Lombard Temple of the eighth century of the most interesting and best preserved of the time, the Cathedral of the fifteenth / sixteenth century, the contemporary city hall, the Devil's Bridge on Natisone the fifteenth century (so called because: it narrates the legend that the Devil. would build the bridge in a single night, but in exchange would have required the soul the first person who had passed over the bridge. So in one night the Devil erected the bridge the next day but the people did cross the bridge a cat. The Devil so he had to settle for the soul of the animal, leaving forever in peace Cividale). Under this order: the town hall with a statue of Caesar, the Cathedral, the temple Lombard. Top Cividale with the Devil's Bridge.

The Byzantine army
When I spoke of 'Roman Empire, there had also said that when the last emperor of the West (Romulus) was placed in the fifth century, in fact, the "tradition" of Rome was not finished. In fact, in the east was still standing, albeit a bit 'wobbly, the Roman Empire of the East (with its capital Constantinople) and at least until the seventh century uffuciale his language was Latin. In addition, what we call the Byzantines never called by that name but Romo, even when used as the Greek language. So it would be fair to say that the Roman Empire lasted until 1453, when Constantinople fell to the Turks. The imperial legions followed this change of course over the centuries. In fact what we call today Byzantine Army can be considered as genuine continuation of the late Roman army (see related post) at least until the seventh century. Then we may consider the age of Themata (from the greek = θέματα what is set, then translated into "regiment" and then in the territorial army). In this age soldiers, Stratioti (in greek soldiers στρατιώτες =)), became farmers in times of peace, then return to arms in case of invasion. At the end of the Empire (from around 1200) the army was composed only of mercenaries. The skipper of the "thema" (or regiment) was the Strategos , sometimes supported by a second in command, the ' hypostrategos . The army was divided into divisions, headed by merarches , the current general. A division was further divided into three regiments, which were each controlled by a moirarches , the current Colonel. Other officers were the Komes (captains) and ilarches (lieutenants), Member hekatontarches (platoon commanders, that until the mid-seventh century was called centurion). Last among the officers who had commanded a dozen men. The lowest level of the Byzantine army was phylax .
More and more importance was the cavalry Byzantine Army, especially the heavy that Catafratta (above knight's helmet and playing soldier and horse catafratto) with important news than the ancient Roman, a much stronger armor, a medieval helmet with feathers to enhance it and bring more fear to the enemy and horse armor, making it difficult for the enemy's arrows could hurt him and then leave in the hands of the master himself. The maid however, was defended by a support mesh (heavier and less protective than those in segments in vogue until the second / third century in the Roman legions), an oval or oblong wooden shield, a helmet-like metal one used by many soldiers in the Middle Ages (the senior officers had one other similar to the ancient Roman parade, sometimes with precious gems included, photos below), a long sword, spears and lances. There were also the archer on foot or on horseback. The army also had a uniform elliptical parade (pictured above). In the last period armor and equipment was similar to that of other European or Asian soldiers. (Pictured below)
